And just like that, another summer has passed us by, well… nearly. Despite enjoying numerous heatwaves, we’re feeling ready to wrap up warm, opt for nights in over nights out, and choose self-care over pretty much anything else.
Self-care includes looking after your skin - from your face to your toes - and with the changing weather, means there should also be a change in your skincare routine.
For a breakdown on transitioning your summer skincare to autumn and winter, read on.
Why Should the Seasons Affect My Skincare Routine?
During the warmer summer months, our skin typically benefits from increased humidity, leading to a more hydrated and dewy appearance. However, the combination of sun exposure and sweat can also cause major damage. As autumn rolls around, the air becomes colder and drier which can strip the skin of its natural moisture, leading to flakiness and increased sensitivity.
Transitioning your skincare routine isn’t solely about switching products, but also about understanding your skin’s changing needs. That’s why in autumn we need to be focusing on repairing any damage caused by sun exposure and major hydration.
Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate
We know that the sun can cause irreparable damage, but if you’re careful when exposed to the sun and ensure you’re quickly addressing any sun exposure issues, there’s no reason to worry. This starts with a good-quality, hydrating moisturiser.
As we see less and less of the sun and the air becomes cooler and drier, your skin will lose moisture far quicker. Start by taking a look at your existing moisturiser and assessing whether it’s hydrating enough for the changing temperature. You’ll need to opt for a deeply hydrating moisturiser for your entire body, not just your face.
To lock in even more moisture, moisturise after a bath or shower when your skin is still damp.
Adjust Your Exfoliation
Yes, you should be exfoliating year round, but when it comes to the colder months, we need to be more careful. Our skin is already battling with harsher, colder, drier conditions so we need to taper down the exfoliation so as not to strip our skin.
Rather than a daily exfoliation, consider a gentle exfoliation 1-2 times per week. We suggest using a gentle Face Mask Bar to exfoliate the face and body, one that is anti-inflammatory and anti-comedogenic.
Remember to lock in moisture with a deeply hydrating moisturiser once you’ve exfoliated so that your skin doesn’t dry out further.
Switch to a Gentle Cleanser
Harsh cleansers can strip your skin of its natural oils, leading to dryness and irritation. The gentler cleansers are typically fragrance-free, non-comedogenic and don’t include harsh chemicals.
We often associate cleansing with removing makeup, dirt and impurities, which - although true - cleansers can, and should, be used for your entire body, not just your face.
Opt for a cleansing soap to remove pollutants from all over your body, we love this Sento Sea Salt & Moss Natural Soap.
Now that your skin is ready for the colder seasons, remember to take time out for you this autumn. Nothing says self-care quite like a cosy night in, bubble bath, candles, and all of your bathing favourites.
